Penny Black is a series of works emerging out of catastrophe, the war in Iraq. Smith painstakingly trawled the internet collecting individual thumbnail images duplicating them en masse. Using a repeating pattern the miniature images create a field of colour derived purely from the detail. As the eye is drawn to a single image a gateway into the macabre is opened and the relentless despair of human tragedy and disaster is highlighted.
