Born in Mexico in 1965 Smith trained in Fine Art at Birmingham University England graduating in 1988. Smith works from the point of view of a sculptor across a wide range of medium and materials from large-scale sculptural installations to up-close-and-personal photographic interventions and video works. Smith's art is contextualised through his ongoing relationship with the site-specific trespassing and underpinning the urban landscape with direct action/reaction between artwork and audience, driving a clear desire to confront contemporary issues, social order and the borders within our society.

Exhibitions and residencies in France, Spain, Australia, Hungary Belgium and the UK, has seen his work develop on an international platform. In 2001 he was awarded the Henry Moore Fellowship in Sculpture at the University of Derby, resulting in a series of video and sculptural artworks exhibited in the UK Germany, Japan and Taiwan.
